Making Ends Meet
Mechanics Institute – Singleton Potters, Singleton Quilters Inc and The Tarts (Textile Artists)
- Opening Night: Thursday 6 April | 6pm
The Mechanics’ Institute is one of Singleton’s oldest buildings, having been officially opened in July 1867. This amazing space is now home to the Singleton Family History Society Inc., but also to an engaged group of local makers who meet regularly to share and collaborate, celebrating the traditional skills of crafting by hand. The works displayed in ‘Making Ends Meet’ show the strengths to be gained through working as part of a collective, where individuals bring their distinctive perspectives to the materials they use. The exhibition’s title relates to the long crafting tradition of ‘making do’, where raw materials are recycled and reimagined into new objects, embedded with the care of their makers. Here, the way humble materials are joined and processed is key to the outcome. Whether the material is clay or thread, these makers invest time and energy to both preserve traditional techniques and to inspire us with new and unique creations.
