Cosmic Swamp

Cosmic Swamp is an immersive installation that blends sculpture, lighting, animation & costume design, developed by Newcastle artist Jenna Pippin (@eviebopper). We enter into a distant alien planet that has been decimated by an asteroid. Earth has been destroyed, and a chunk of our home planet has drifted into space. This is the asteroid that has brought Earth’s legacy to this new galaxy. The asteroid is riddled with plastic, rubber, crystals, and organisms that have triggered a new evolutionary pathway- Earth and human history, both organic and manmade.
Fantastical creatures, strange formations and a strange new world.
Cycles of creation and destruction is the conceptual basis for Cosmic Swamp. After a sudden traumatic loss, which led to chronic illness, the asteroid was built out of broken crystals, textile waste and scrap plastic. The glowing, other worldly sculpture became the foundation for this exhibition. The installation represents life after trauma, as asteroids will first destroy, and after this life will take on a new shape. Cosmic Swamp is a safe space where those experiencing loss and PTSD can feel a sense that life can be renewed and rebuilt.
The exhibition will also display larger-than-life costume designs, which blend elements of creatures we see on Earth. Fantasy and Sci-Fi inspired costume design has been at the forefront of Jenna’s artistic practice for the past year. These creature concepts are the masters of this alien planet, where a strange yet familiar habitat has developed.
